BAY OF MONT SAINT-MICHEL: « NATURA 2000 » SITE *

(*Network of the Ministry of Ecology and Sustainable Development)

With the creation of Natura 2000, Europe has launched an ambitious network of ecological sites with the following 2 objectives: to preserve biological diversity and promote the natural heritage of our territories. The network covers the whole of Europe in order to bring coherence to preserve species and natural habitats.

2 European directives have been created to achieve the objectives of Natura 2000: The "Birds" (1979) and "Habitats flora fauna" (1992). They establish the regulatory basis of the European ecological network. Among designated sites under these 2 directives, is the Bay of Mont Saint Michel.

Biodiversity is an asset to our territories and for men.

Natura 2000 is a real challenge for sustainable development of outstanding rural territories. It allows combining biodiversity conservation and maintenance of human activities of their territory, in the context of a discussion with local actors involved in the life of the site.

The Natura 2000 network is in constant evolution. It is characterized by the objective of bringing together a preserved nature and human activities responsible and respectful of their territory. This orientation results in user participation in the management and development. Biodiversity is an asset to promote the development of socio-economic activities such as sustainable tourism by the creation of local products, educational activities, sports, community and by crafts. Above all, a Natura 2000 site provides each of its residents the opportunity to reach an unparalleled quality of life. Texts from www.natura2000.fr
